Argumentative essay
“E-Books is the Best Way to Develop
Students Literacy”
Student and
literacy is something that has a close relation. As we know, one of the method
increase their literacy is to support their interesting to read the books. In
the fact, many students doesn’t like to read the book. For most of them, read
is bored activity. The teacher have to
know how to depelove their students literacy. Some article claim, that books
better than e-book. Because they said the e-book has some disadvantage, such as
some of which require signing a license that limits the user.(Stallman, 2011)
They said, story
books hold a special places in children literacy depelovment. As children are
read to they acquire an enormous amount of topical knowledge. Altought many
experiences are said to contribute to early literacy no other single activity
is regarded as importent as the shared book experience between caregiver and
children. Consequently, a critical focus in early literacy has been to get
books in children hand’s. (Neuman, 2009)
Then, using
books in the classroom’ begins with suggestions about how teachers and students
can increase the amount of written material in their classrooms. It then looks
at books in particular, with the aim of helping teachers understand the types
of books available and to begin thinking about what makes a good book for
children.(Reilly, 2009) So, the books is an important thing to supporting students
literacy.
Kimanuka (2015)
argues that there
is a challenge
to create a
culture of reading
books by educating
parents about the importance of reading books to their children. The
same author points out that there is no doubt that reading is an essential tool
for lifelong learning and that it is important for everyone to develop the
rudiments of reading and the culture of reading always so as to survive in our
increasingly challenging world. (Triennale, 2017)
But, students
now spend a lot of time reading from a screen: computers, kindle, mobile
devices. Theresearch into the implications of this are still in the early
stages, however current evidence indicates that at this point in time print may
be slightly superior to the screen in relation tocomprehension, learning,
retention and ease of use. However, as
screen technology continues to advance, interfaces become increasingly
intuitive and personal preferences change from early exposure to reading on a
screen, this may change — and may have already changed for some individuals.
The concept of ‘digital natives’has been debunked (Bennett, Maton
& Kervin, 2008) and we cannot assume that all students are comfortable with
technology.(Salter, 2013)
How about our
modern era? Technology also an important things that can be separated with our
life. Zucker and others (2009) reported at the level of applied practice,
e-books proved that they are attractive tools for many learners, because it can
be easily integrated within educational programs for literacy, whichrequired
teachers to have a bit
of procedural knowledge
and practical skill
to use computer.
Firstly, educational
technology is commonly used. The use of technology at preschool education has
an important role with a lot of effective methods so that children can learn.
Preschool teachers use the technology to support children’s development. Early
literacy skills have gained more importance especially in the recent years. As
a result, the use of technology has been necessary to develop early literacy
skills. On the other hand, we can not
refuse technology.
In the previous
studies related to E-book interactive book reading are gathered and it aims to
introduce based on dialogue E-book to families and teachers and makes some
proposals to support the early literacy skills through based on dialogue
E-book. Besides, by studying the related literature, developing early skills to
reading E-book or reading book were compared and the results were argued.(N & Ph, 2017)
Electronic
books (e-storybooks) are widely used in early childhood classrooms in efforts
to encourage engagement in storybooks while promoting emergent literacy development.
The current research believe e-storybooks useful for supporting young children
and offers this evidence can be translated into best practice in classroom. The
use of e-storybooks in early childhood classrooms seems to be a growing trend. Educators
are interested in the use of reading technologies to support young emergent
readers, especially those who are at risk for reading failure. E-storybooks
allow children to read and listen to a book while obtaining emergent literacy
supports including digital features(Moody, 2010)
Literacy tool
would promote literacy more, electronic books or print books. The new
literacies theory implies that teachers implement technology into their
classrooms so that students can navigate through the 21stcentury. eBooks could
help students reading comprehension skills improve. Six students were chosen to
test reading retell comprehension after interacting with an eBook’s enhanced
features. When testing students reading retell comprehension with print books,
students read aloud for a pre-reading assessment. It was found that eBooks
contain engaging reading features that help students improve reading
comprehension. Multiple implications will help teachers improve their
curriculum with the use of eBooks along with professional development.(Reid, 2016)
The
reading behaviors of 25 preschool-aged children were observed during three
storybook reading conditions: adult led e-storybook, child led e-storybook, and
adult led traditional storybook. Children’s level of reading engagement and
type and quantity of communicative initiations were analyzed. When comparing
media, children displayed higher levels of persistence during the adult led
e-storybook compared to the adult led traditional storybook condition. However,
children produced more communicative initiations during the adult led
traditional storybook condition. When comparing the reading manner between
adult and child led e-storybook conditions, more labelling references were
observed during the adult led condition. Results suggested that both media and
manner matter.(Moody, Justice,
& Cabell, 2010)
Finally,
from many recent research, technology give an importent role to increase
students literacy and e-books are really useful to increase student literacy.
Because most of them more interesting to using e-books than printed books. So,
I believe that e-books effective to depelove students literacy.
